ABOUT MS. MORAN
I grew up in New England, in a small coastal town in New Hampshire. In 2004, I graduated from the University of Vermont, where I double-majored in English and Studio Art, and embarked on a cross-country journey that would end up spanning over one and a half decades. My western adventure began with the beautiful desert landscape of sunny Arizona as its backdrop, and it was there that I realized what I wanted to do with my passion for education and art. In 2009, I graduated with a MA in Art Education from the University of Arizona, and I became a full-time licensed art teacher. My work during the early years of my teaching career was inspired by professors who encouraged progressive thinking about meaningful art making, often with a visual culture and social justice lens, and these experiences remain some of the most formative and influential in my professional practice to this day. These early work experiences include work with various community, museum, and non-profit visual arts organizations, in addition to teaching middle school art, high school digital photography, and four semesters of undergraduate courses at the University of Arizona.
After spending almost seven years in the desert, I made the decision to pack up and venture even further west, on to Southern California. Naturally, I found a comfortable home in the beautiful year-round weather along the idyllic Pacific Ocean. I continued my teaching career for nearly a decade in the San Dieguito Union High School District, where I had the pleasure of serving the coastal communities of North County San Diego, CA, teaching high school visual arts at Torrey Pines High School and Canyon Crest Academy.
Most recently, after spending seventeen years living out west, I have found myself embarking on yet another new adventure, this time circling back to the nostalgic and familiar. I recently returned to the east coast, and after dedicating my first 3 years in Massachusetts teaching at William Diamond Middle School, I am excited to now be joining the esteemed team of educators at Lexington High School. When I'm not teaching or making art, I enjoy hiking, camping, traveling, reading, writing, and spending quality time with friends, family, and my dog and cat.
My Teaching Philosophy in a Nutshell: Art has been a really important vehicle and space for personal growth and reflection throughout my life, and I encourage my students to explore similar connections with art in their own lives. I believe the process of creating, viewing, and discussing visual art and the contexts in which it is created, provides students with a unique opportunity to develop and strengthen invaluable communication, critical thinking, and creative problem solving skills. I believe art functions as language, that it has the power to transcend socially and culturally constructed boundaries in positive and meaningful ways, and that its value is both compelling and inherent in all of our lives. Over the course of this school year, it is my hope to facilitate opportunities for my students to better understand themselves and the world in which we live, while cultivating a community of thoughtful, creative, and engaged learners and young adults.
It is my greatest pleasure to have the privilege to work with the community of students and families at Lexington High School this year! Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time.
